A pair of engineering incidents this winter led AWS to rework how staff-level AI tooling is governed. One event briefly disrupted a single internal service in a region of mainland China; a separate episode affected internal tooling without exposing customer-facing systems.
Amazon attributes the root cause to improper user permissions rather than any autonomous decision-making by the coding assistants. Engineers had operator-equivalent access and were able to push changes without the normal secondary approval step—an operational hole the company says it is closing.
The group’s newer assistant, Kiro, launched mid-year to generate code from formal specifications, moving beyond simpler ‘vibe’ style helpers. AWS says Kiro is gaining customer traction, even as some staff remain unconvinced about its everyday reliability.
In response to the incidents, AWS has implemented multiple procedural controls: mandatory peer review for changes coming from AI-assisted outputs, focused staff retraining, and tightened access rights for the affected toolchain.
