WordPress.com launches built-in AI assistant to edit sites, restyle pages and generate images

Automattic has embedded a site-aware WordPress AI assistant into WordPress.com that edits content, changes visual styles, and produces images from prompts. The feature runs in the editor, operates on pages using block themes, and connects to Google’s Gemini models for image generation and edits.

The assistant accepts natural-language directions to tweak layout, color palettes, and typography without requiring precise prompts. It can add structural elements such as contact pages or testimonial blocks and applies modifications immediately in the live editing canvas. For copy work, the assistant rewrites bios, suggests headlines, and offers grammar and fact-checking support through the editor’s AI integration. Collaborative workflows get AI input via the Block Notes editor by invoking the bot with an @ai command, which returns citations and source links. Visual assets are produced or altered using Gemini’s lightweight models, named internally as Nano Banana, and a new “Generate Image” control appears in the Media Library. Site owners opt in from their Sites > Settings > AI tools panel, or receive the assistant automatically when they purchase the platform’s AI website builder. The rollout excludes classic themes; only themes built on the block architecture show the assistant inside the editor. The design prioritizes low-friction prompts, where broad requests like changing a section’s mood or boosting contrast trigger actionable UI updates. From a platform standpoint, this integrates content generation, layout automation, and image synthesis into one editor session. That consolidation reduces hand-offs between separate design and asset tools and shortens the path from brief to published page. Early implications include faster small-site iteration, higher reliance on third-party generative models, and a larger role for platform-level AI controls in site management.
